Out of America
There are about 5 million Americans living abroad, and in today's turbulent political environment, countless others are contemplating making a move. Can you become one of us? Should you?
Who Am I?
My name is Ed Grosvenor. I'm a 50-year-old busines owner and father of three living in Basel, Switzerland. I was born and raised in the Chicago area and moved out of the United States (presumably) for good in 2022. Since the election of Donald Trump to a second term, I've had dozens of friends and family members reach out with questions about living outside the United States. So I thought this might be a good time to open a conversation about what that really entails.
This project seeks to explore both the how and the why of moving out of the US. Every week, I'll sit down with other expats and talk about why they left and their experiences as immigrants in strange lands.
Moving in my 40s with children to a country where I didn't speak the language has been exceedingly challenging, but also rewarding. I don't have any regrets, but there are definitely things I wish I'd known before I signed on. I'm hoping that the conversations I have here will help others who are considering making the move understand more fully what they're in for.

If you're an American living outside of the United States, either permanently or on assignment, I'd love to talk to you. The first part of this project is a weekly podcast / YouTube video in which I just meet other American expats and we share our stories. If you'd like to be one of them, please reach out.
