Albania allows Americans to stay visa-free for one year, making it one of Europe's most accessible countries for long-term remote work without paperwork. For formal residency, Americans can register a business or as self-employed to obtain a temporary residence permit. Albania has one of Europe's lowest costs of living, Mediterranean coastline, and EU candidate status.
Americans accepted to an Albanian university can obtain a student residence permit through the Albanian State Police. While most instruction is in Albanian, some private institutions and the growing network of international branch campuses offer English-medium programs. Tirana is one of Europe's most affordable capitals, and Albania's Adriatic and Ionian coastlines provide an exceptional quality of life; it is also an EU candidate country, adding long-term strategic appeal for those building Balkan ties.
American residents in Albania can apply to reunite with their spouse and dependent children through the Albanian State Police. The sponsor must have a valid residence permit, demonstrate income to support the family, and provide suitable accommodation. Family reunification permits are typically issued for one year, renewable annually, with family members permitted to work; permanent residency is available after five years of continuous legal stay in Albania.
