Climate
Hugely varied β€” Buenos Aires has a temperate climate with hot humid summers (28–35Β°C) and mild winters (5–15Β°C). Patagonia in the south is cool and windy year-round. Mendoza wine country is dry and sunny. Salta in the northwest is subtropical. Argentina spans from subtropical jungle to sub-Antarctic β€” virtually every climate is represented.
Free-movement & residency agreements

What this country's membership in bigger zones means for someone who ends up with residency or citizenship here.

MERCOSUR Residency Agreement

Legal residents of one member state can apply for simplified temporary or permanent residency in any other. Covers Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and the associated states of Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Not free movement β€” you still need to apply β€” but the bar is meaningfully lower than a cold application.

Entry paths

Visa types available to foreign nationals. Not all will fit every profile β€” log in for a personalised shortlist.

  • Digital Nomad Visa

Argentina's Digital Nomad Visa was introduced in 2022 and is valid for 6 months (extendable for another 6 months). For longer stays, many nomads use the rentista or independent worker visa route. Buenos Aires is one of Latin America's most sophisticated cities with a European feel, vibrant culture, world-class cuisine, and extremely low costs due to favorable exchange rates.

Initial: 12 mo From $2,500/mo income
  • Rentista Visa (Self-Employed / Passive Income)

Argentina's Rentista visa is for those with stable income from abroad β€” investments, rent, or self-employment. It requires demonstrating at least $1,200/month and grants a path to permanent residency in just 2 years. Argentina has one of the fastest citizenship timelines in South America, and the blue dollar rate historically makes US income stretch 2–3x further than official rates.

    Initial: 12 mo
  • Student Temporary Residence

Americans enrolled in an Argentine university can obtain a student temporary residence permit valid for one year, renewable for the program's duration. Argentina's public universities β€” most famously the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) β€” charge no tuition even for international students, making it perhaps the world's best value for a world-class urban university experience. Buenos Aires is a vast, sophisticated city with extraordinary culture, cuisine, and nightlife, and Argentina's periodic economic volatility actually works in students' favor: dollar-denominated income or savings go very far.

    Initial: 12 mo
  • Family Reunification Temporary Residence

American residents in Argentina can sponsor a spouse, partner, and dependent children for family reunification (residencia temporaria por razones de reunificaciΓ³n familiar). The sponsor must hold a valid temporary or permanent residence permit; the process is administered by the National Migration Directorate (DNM). Family members receive work authorization and can apply for permanent residency after just two years of continuous legal residence β€” one of the fastest timelines in Latin America.
