Temperate continental โ€” warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Vienna averages -2ยฐC in January and 25ยฐC in July. The Alps in western Austria (Tyrol, Salzburg) offer spectacular alpine conditions. Spring and autumn are beautiful throughout.
Free-movement & residency agreements

What this country's membership in bigger zones means for someone who ends up with residency or citizenship here.

European Union

Citizens of EU member states can live, work, study, and retire in any other EU country without a visa or work permit. Naturalizing here is one of the most powerful ways to unlock long-term mobility across Europe.

Schengen Area

Passport-free travel across 29 European states for short stays. A long-term residence permit from one Schengen country does not automatically grant residency in the others, but day-to-day travel within the area is seamless once you're legally in.

  • Student Visa

Austria's student visa allows Americans to study at Austrian universities and institutions. Austria's universities include the University of Vienna (one of Europe's oldest), TU Wien, and WU Vienna, with growing English-language course offerings. Requires proof of enrollment, financial means (~โ‚ฌ960/month), health insurance, and accommodation. After graduating, students can apply for a 12-month job-seeker permit (Aufenthaltsbewilligung Arbeitsuche).

  • Red-White-Red Card (Skilled Worker)
    Official source

Austria's Red-White-Red Card is a points-based work and residence permit for non-EU skilled workers. Categories include: highly qualified workers (no job offer needed if scoring enough points), skilled workers in shortage occupations (job offer required), and other key workers. Points scored on education, work experience, age, language skills, and Austrian connection. Leads to permanent residency after 5 years. Citizenship after 10 years (6 years under special circumstances).

    Initial: 24 mo
  • Family Reunification Permit
    Official source

Americans who are spouses or dependent children of a legal Austrian resident or citizen can apply for family reunification. Spouses must demonstrate A1 German language skills before the visa is issued (same requirement as Germany). The sponsor must meet minimum income thresholds and have adequate housing. Grants an annual residence permit renewable each year, with long-term residence available after 5 years. Spouses of Austrian citizens follow a slightly simpler path.
