The Bahamas Extended Access Travel Stay (BEATS) program allows remote workers and self-employed individuals to live in the Bahamas for one year, renewable. Applicants must demonstrate sufficient income to support themselves. The Bahamas has no income tax, capital gains tax, or wealth tax, and offers pristine beaches just a short flight from the US east coast with a fully English-speaking environment.
Americans enrolled at the University of The Bahamas or another recognized institution can obtain a student permit for the duration of their studies. The Bahamas is fully English-speaking with a legal system based on British common law, and its proximity to the US (Nassau is just 180 miles from Miami) makes it exceptionally convenient for American students. The marine sciences program benefits from one of the world's richest coral reef ecosystems, and Ross University School of Medicine's former campus drew thousands of American pre-med students to the island.
American residents in The Bahamas can sponsor a spouse and dependent children for family dependency status through the Department of Immigration. The sponsor must hold a valid residence permit and demonstrate adequate income and accommodation. The Bahamas' English-speaking environment, proximity to the US, and high standard of living make it a practical family base, though the overall cost of living is among the highest in the Caribbean. Permanent residency requires at least 10 years of continuous legal stay under standard categories.
