Belgium's Single Permit combines a work and residence permit in one application, required for non-EU nationals working in Belgium for more than 90 days. The employer applies on the worker's behalf to the regional authority (Flanders, Wallonia, or Brussels-Capital). Special category for highly qualified workers (university degree + salary above threshold) has a simplified process. Belgium is home to many EU institutions and multinationals, making it attractive for international careers.
Belgium's student visa allows Americans to enroll in Belgian universities or higher education institutions for programs over 90 days. Belgium hosts excellent universities โ KU Leuven, ULB, VUB, and Ghent University โ with strong English-language programs, particularly at graduate level. Requires proof of enrollment, financial means (~โฌ800/month), health insurance, and accommodation. After graduation, students can request a 12-month job-seeker permit to find employment in Belgium.
Americans who are spouses, registered partners, or dependent children of a Belgian citizen or legal resident can apply for family reunification. Sponsors who are Belgian citizens or EU citizens must meet minimum income thresholds and provide adequate housing. Grants a temporary residence permit renewable annually, leading to unlimited residence after 5 years. Belgium's family reunification rules have tightened in recent years; the income requirement and housing standards are strictly enforced.
