Bosnia and Herzegovina allows Americans to register a local company (d.o.o.) or work as self-employed as the basis for a one-year temporary residence permit. Americans can stay visa-free for 90 days, then apply at a local police station. Bosnia has an exceptionally low cost of living, stunning nature, and is an EU candidate country with improving infrastructure.
Americans accepted to a recognized Bosnian university or college can apply for a temporary residence permit for study through the Ministry of Security. Bosnia and Herzegovina has a complex administrative structure with universities across both entities; English-taught programs are limited but growing, particularly in business and international relations. American residents in Bosnia and Herzegovina can apply to reunite with their spouse and dependent minor children through the Ministry of Security's Service for Foreigners' Affairs. The sponsor must hold a valid temporary residence permit and demonstrate adequate income and housing. Family reunification permits are issued for up to one year and are renewable; family members may work and can apply for permanent residency after five years of continuous legal residence in the country.
