Free-movement & residency agreements

What this country's membership in bigger zones means for someone who ends up with residency or citizenship here.

European Union

Citizens of EU member states can live, work, study, and retire in any other EU country without a visa or work permit. Naturalizing here is one of the most powerful ways to unlock long-term mobility across Europe.

Schengen Area

Passport-free travel across 29 European states for short stays. A long-term residence permit from one Schengen country does not automatically grant residency in the others, but day-to-day travel within the area is seamless once you're legally in.

  • Freelancer / Self-Employment Residence Permit

Bulgaria allows Americans to obtain a temporary residence permit based on self-employment or freelance activity registered in Bulgaria. Americans can enter visa-free for 90 days while registering their activity. Bulgaria has among the lowest flat-tax rates in the EU (10%), very low living costs, Black Sea beaches, and EU membership. Sofia has a growing digital nomad scene.

  • Student Residence Permit

Americans enrolled at a Bulgarian university can obtain a long-stay student visa (Type D) and then a temporary residence permit valid for their program duration. Bulgaria has some of the lowest tuition in the EU, with international fees at public universities often under $3,000/yr, and medical schools in Sofia and Plovdiv actively recruit English-speaking international students. Sofia's low cost of living and improving quality of life make it an underrated option for affordable European study.

  • Family Reunification Residence Permit

American residents in Bulgaria may apply to bring their spouse and dependent children to join them under Bulgaria's family reunification framework. The sponsoring resident must hold a valid long-term residence permit, show sufficient income to support all family members without recourse to social assistance, and provide adequate accommodation. Dependent family members can obtain work authorization and become eligible for permanent residency after five years of continuous legal residence.
