Climate
Temperate oceanic β€” mild and often wet. Winters are cool but rarely very cold (average 3–7Β°C in Amsterdam), summers are warm but not hot (18–22Β°C). Rain is distributed throughout the year with no dry season. The Netherlands is famous for grey, overcast skies for much of the year. Spring (tulip season, April–May) and summer are beautiful. Strong winds year-round due to the flat, exposed landscape.
Free-movement & residency agreements

What this country's membership in bigger zones means for someone who ends up with residency or citizenship here.

European Union

Citizens of EU member states can live, work, study, and retire in any other EU country without a visa or work permit. Naturalizing here is one of the most powerful ways to unlock long-term mobility across Europe.

Schengen Area

Passport-free travel across 29 European states for short stays. A long-term residence permit from one Schengen country does not automatically grant residency in the others, but day-to-day travel within the area is seamless once you're legally in.

Entry paths

  • Self-Employment Visa (DAFT β€” Dutch-American Friendship Treaty)
    Official source

The Dutch-American Friendship Treaty (DAFT) gives American citizens a uniquely accessible route to self-employment in the Netherlands β€” available exclusively to US passport holders. Requirements are minimal: register a Dutch business (eenmanszaak), invest at least €4,500 in it, and maintain it. You must live in the Netherlands. Leads to permanent residency after 5 years. One of the easiest legal routes for Americans to gain EU residency without a job offer.

    Initial: 24 mo
  • Student Residence Permit (MVV Study)
    Official source

Americans can study in the Netherlands on a student residence permit, required for programs over 90 days. The Dutch university system is highly internationalized β€” most master's programs are taught entirely in English. Requires acceptance at a Dutch institution, sufficient funds (~€900/month), health insurance, and accommodation. The sponsoring institution typically handles much of the application on your behalf. After graduating, students may apply for the 1-year Orientation Year (Zoekjaar) permit to find work.

    Initial: 12 mo
  • Highly Skilled Migrant (Kennismigrant)
    Official source

The Kennismigrant permit is the Netherlands' primary route for skilled foreign employees. Requires a sponsoring Dutch employer (IND-recognised) and a salary above the income threshold (€5,688+/month for those under 30 in 2024; €6,245+/month for 30+). Fast processing (2–4 weeks). The Netherlands also offers a 30% tax ruling for highly skilled migrants, reducing taxable income significantly for the first 5 years.

Initial: 60 mo From $5,900/mo income
  • Family Reunification Permit
    Official source

Americans who are spouses/partners or dependent children of a Dutch resident or citizen can apply for family reunification. The Dutch sponsor must meet income thresholds (typically at least 100% of the minimum wage for non-EU sponsors), have adequate housing, and pass a reference check. Spouses joining Dutch citizens in the Netherlands who do not have EU nationality must also pass a civic integration exam within 3 years. Grants a renewable residence permit with PR eligibility after 5 years.

Amsterdam, The Hague, and Rotterdam have many international and American schools. The Hague has a particularly large international school ecosystem due to its role as a diplomatic hub. English is so widely spoken that many expats function entirely in English for years.
