Europe (CTA)
A grounded look at living in United Kingdom — visas, costs, healthcare, and what daily life really looks like for Americans.
What this country's membership in bigger zones means for someone who ends up with residency or citizenship here.
Reciprocal residence and work rights between the UK, Ireland, Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands. Irish citizens retain the right to live and work in the UK indefinitely (and vice-versa), and the arrangement persists regardless of Brexit.
Visa types available to foreign nationals. Not all will fit every profile — log in for a personalised shortlist.
The UK Skilled Worker visa requires a job offer from a UK employer licensed to sponsor workers, at an eligible occupation code, paying at least £38,700/year (as of 2024, up from £26,200). Healthcare workers and those on the Shortage Occupation List have different thresholds. Visa includes the Immigration Health Surcharge (~£1,035/year). PR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) available after 5 years. Citizenship after 1 more year.
The UK Student Visa allows Americans to study a full-time degree or longer course at a licensed UK higher education provider. The UK has some of the world's top-ranked universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, and the LSE. Requires a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from the institution, financial proof (~£1,334/month for London, £1,023 outside London), English proficiency, and health surcharge payment. After graduating, most students can switch to the Graduate Route for 2 years (3 for PhDs) of open work permission.
The UK Ancestry Visa is available to Commonwealth citizens (not Americans) who have a grandparent born in the UK. Americans holding dual citizenship with a Commonwealth country — such as Canada, Australia, or New Zealand — can use this route to live and work freely in the UK for 5 years, leading to Indefinite Leave to Remain and then citizenship. Americans without a Commonwealth passport are not eligible and must use other UK routes instead.
The UK Global Talent visa is for leaders and potential leaders in academia, research, arts, culture, and digital technology — no job offer required. Endorsement is needed from a designated body (Tech Nation for digital tech, British Academy for humanities, etc.). "Exceptional talent" endorsees can get ILR after 3 years; "exceptional promise" after 5. Highly flexible — you can be self-employed, employed, or set up a business. No annual salary requirement.
Americans who are spouses, unmarried partners, or dependent children of a British citizen or settled person can apply for a UK Family Visa. The sponsor must meet a minimum income threshold of £29,000/year (as of 2024, rising to £38,700 by 2025). Grants an initial 2.5-year leave to remain, renewable for a further 2.5 years, after which indefinite leave to remain (ILR) is available. After ILR, British citizenship can be applied for after 12 months. The UK financial threshold is higher than many EU countries and is a key eligibility hurdle.
